Each button represents a ‘disappeared’ person in the Guatemalan civil war (1960-1996). This work was inspired by being at a demonstration in the central square of Guatemala City in 2015. Pictures of disappeared people were printed on white flags hung on rope across the square. Many people studied them; it was very moving.
This work represents coffins of soldiers killed in futile wars; the hats are placed on top out of respect, as is done in military funerals. It is a statement about the senseless deaths in hopeless wars (such as Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq).
